A group of 31 engineering students recently visited Shell Refining Company at Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus (about 68 km from UNMC campus) on 22nd October 2013. The journey started at 7:15 am from the campus and reached Shell PD refinery at about 8:30 am. They were accompanied by Dr Hii Ching Lik (Department of Chemical & Environmental Engineering) and Dr Niusha Shafi Abady (Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering). Upon arrival at the refinery, a safety briefing was given to the students at the safety center before visiting the refinery facilities. At the safety center, the students were exposed to various gears and equipments used by the refinery engineers to ensure safe working environment. Next the students were brought for a refinery tour inside the bus for a closed up view at the processing equipments i.e. reactors, distillation columns and heat exchangers. The accompanying engineer gave a short briefing related to the daily operation of the plant and the functions of various process equipments. After the plant tour, the students were presented with a talk about career and internship opportunities at Shell Malaysia. The visit ended at 1 pm after a lunch treat provided by the host.
Thanks to Dr Belle Ooi who had initiated this visit and made all the necessary arrangements with Shell.
