Thomson Reuter Impact Factors: 2012
It is that time of the year that all journal editor-in-chiefs and publisher both love and fear. It is the time of the year when the new Thomson Reuter’s Journal Citation Reports are released.
If the impact factor for your journal of choice has gone up, then all is right with the world and you can breath a sigh of relief for another year. If the impact factor has gone down, it is time to see if the sector (or more rightly category) has also gone down so that you can say that it is a category thing, rather than something specific to your beloved journal.
Of course, authors are also concerned (rightly or wrongly, but that is another debate) about impact factors and in the Malaysian (MyRA) context, it is also important as the MyRA instrument requires us to sum up ISI (and Scopus) impact factors.
Just to see some of the effects, I have taken a (very) unrepresentative sample of journals to see how their impact factors have moved. This list is drawn from the journals I have published in and also most of those on the recent post about our 2013 publications. Of course, it should go without saying that it is not sensible to compare impact factors across disciplines.
