International Student Ambassadors: Kristina from Slovakia

Kristina is a Slovakian student who is studying MSc Rehabilitation Psychology

Why did you choose the University of Nottingham?

I got to know about this course at the University of Nottingham from my former lecturer, who has been my great role model and has been motivating me to grow within the field. Therefore, I chose to research about UoN and available courses, as well as the city of Nottingham, and I think I fell in love. I also learned that University of Nottingham is a highly rated university with well recognised name, which also eased my decision making.

What is your favourite thing about the University of Nottingham?

Since I really love spending my time in the nature, I really appreciate the University Park. I enjoy simply walking around, or when the weather permits, reading a book by the lake. However, I cannot emphasis enough how appreciative I am of the support and friendliness of the academic and other university staff. I think it is great to be considered as a colleague or a member of a team, rather than “just a student”. Furthermore, it is very helpful that university provides such variety of services and tools which make the student life a tad easier.

What is the best thing about your course?

Well, I guess as any other student, it is natural to feel very anxious at the beginning, and maybe even unsure about the course choice. However, the thing I like the most about my course is that it feels like personally tailored to my interests and future aspirations. It is interesting and engaging. Even though, it gets quite challenging at times, there is always great support available.

What do you do with your spare time, and what are your hobbies?

I try to use my spare time the best way I can, to grow both personally and professionally. I do some volunteering and work on a side. However, I do like to work on myself and learning about wellbeing, which is associated to my studies and future occupation. I enjoy meditation and yoga, reading, walks in nature, but I do not say “no” to some good movie /series or shopping “therapy” either. I spent 5 years living on an island by the sea and travelling around, so the most precious activity for me would be spending the time at the beach or in the plane.

What is your experience of accommodation in Nottingham?

I must say that I consider myself quite lucky when it comes to accommodation. I am living in a private student accommodation facility, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes their own privacy and space, but still want to have the feel of “student life”.  Despite the initial obstacles, it is nice place to live in, with great location in the city, making it easier to explore the surroundings, as well as to commute to university. Nonetheless, I think it is important to be cautious and make your own research before choosing any accommodation.

What would be your top tips for a new international student starting at the University of Nottingham in their first year?

I would say that everyone will have somewhat unique and different experience at the University of Nottingham and the city alike. The most important thing is that it is enjoyable and manageable to you. I would suggest that it is important to appropriately balance your studies with your free time. Even though it is easier said than done, we all have been there at some point. Having the time doing stuff important to you, makes you more productive when you need to focus on your academic work, and if you need to, do not hesitate to ask for help.
