The S-Lab Laboratory Design and Services Conference at The University of Nottingham

Director of Sustainability Andy Nolan talks about the upcoming S-Lab conference hosted in the new GSK Carbon Neutral Lab at Jubilee.

We’re really pleased to be hosting the forthcoming S-Lab conference here in Nottingham on September 21st. The event is part of the launch of our new GSK Carbon-Neutral Sustainable Chemistry Laboratory, which we hope sets new benchmarks for energy and environmental performance in research facilities.GSK lab

Come and see it for yourselves – I’d be delighted to see as many of you as possible at the event and to see the building itself. It’s a fantastic looking building and it’s doubled-our solar PV portfolio overnight. We use a biodiesel system to heat and power both the carbon neutral lab and neighbouring buildings and have one of the most spectacular green roofs. And the whole thing is built almost entirely from timber …

S-Lab conference programme

The conference itself has a whole stream devoted to the building, and other sessions also describe our refurbishment of chemistry and life science teaching laboratories. There are also many other sessions on laboratory design case studies (many featuring use of BIM); ventilation; equipment and energy/environmental improvement. The latter includes presentations on BREEAM and Labs; BREEAM/LEED comparison based on the GSK Lab’s use of both; Salix-funded opportunities with a King’s College case study; embedding sustainability into estates processes at the University of Edinburgh; and an interactive discussion session on what works and what doesn’t when trying to improve laboratory sustainability.

We think it’ll be a great day and we’d love to see you here in Nottingham – hope you can make it. Book soon as places are going fast.
