#NottsVarsity 2019 | Super Sunday Preview
Super-Sunday will take place at the David Ross Sports Village on Sunday 31stMarch and will see Swimming, Water Polo, Table Tennis, Fencing, Handball, Badminton, Squash and Karate fixtures as NTU and UON battle it out for a crucial varsity point. Ahead of a full day of top level sport, UoN spoke to representatives from Swimming, Water Polo, Fencing and Handball.
Swimming
UoN have had a strong season again this year and look confident to build upon last year’s Varsity success. Ahead of Super Sunday UoN Sport spoke to Club President Alec Lewis and Men’s Captain Harry Manship to get their thoughts on the big day!
Harry felt confident going into Varsity on the back of such a successful season:
“We are currently having our best ever season, we have doubled our BUCS points from last year and last year was our previous best season ever so we are feeling confident. We have had a number of podium finishes in our galas this year and one of our swimmers has even been to the European championships!”
Club President Alec then told us why people should come down to support and what a Varsity victory would mean to the club:
“Personally, we have not yet lost to NTU so we don’t want to be the year that loses a Varsity fixture for the first time. Everyone should come down to support and see some quick racing! it’s all very fast paced with quick turnovers in-between races. There are 4 NTU lanes and 4 UoN lanes so it’s very clear to see the winners and losers.”TU Water Polo are looking to win at this year’s series.
Water polo
Both UoNMen’s and Women’s first teams have both won every single game this year, including huge wins on BUCS Big Wednesday so both sides will naturally be feeling confident heading into this year’s Varsity Water Polo fixture. Ahead of what will be a fiercely competitive Super Sunday at David Ross Sport’s Village we spoke to Ben Warner, UoN Water Polo President to get see how he was feeling for this year’s fixtures.
“We have never lost a Varsity fixture, this will be the 2ndyear for the Women’s team and 5thyear for the Men’s team. We are very confident as we have won every game this season and as this is the strongest team we have ever fielded in both genders so hopefully with both teams having unbeaten seasons we can bring home the win. “
Ben is encouraging everyone from both UoN and NTU to come down and show your colours ”It’s always a great atmosphere that always fills maximum capacity of around 400, it’s easy to follow and very entertaining!”
Fencing
In a fiercely contested 2018 Varsity Fixture it was UoN that came out on top and they will be hoping for a return to last year’s success. We spoke to fencing Club President Cara Lucia-Mae Chambers to gather her thoughts on this year’s Super Sunday.
It has been a very successful season in general for the fencing teams that will be representing UoN at Super Sunday. Cara said “Our men’s 1s have won the BUCS Northern Premier league this time for the first time in history and our Women’s 1s finished 3rdin the BUCS Northern Premier league which is again one of their best ever finishes. I’m feeling really confident heading into this year’s varsity fixture, we have a really good team spirit this year.”
When asked about what a 2019 Varsity win would mean to her Cara said:
“I played in last year’s fixture, it was really good and having mixed teams really helps integrate the club. For me it would be amazing to win it, but I also think it would be a great moral boost for the whole club and finish the season on a high. I hope we win, I think we will”
Handball
UoN Sport spoke to Handball President Emily Richardson to see how she was feeling going into this year’s Varsity Fixture. As a non-BUCS sport, Varsity really is the pinnacle of the handball calendar.
“We have had a pretty good season, we compete every year in the England handball University Championships, our Men’s 1s got to quarter finals of the Cup and the Women’s 1s came runner up in the plate. So we did pretty well!”
“I’m very excited and am waiting in anticipation, it’s going to be a close call. Our women haven’t played NTU but our men have and there have been 1 or 2 goals in it each time. So I think this year will be the closest it’s ever been.”
“Last year we won both our games which we intend to do again. As a non-BUCS sport, it’s amazing to have varsity, it’s a great opportunity to play a full hour of handball against a really good team its always the highlight of our year. “
Karate
With UoN claiming a very narrow victory on a medal count of 6-4 on golds in last year’s Varsity it was the closest NTU came to taking a Super Sunday Victory. We Spoke to Club President Olivia to see how they have got on this season:
“We have done really well this year, we came 2ndoverall at BUCS nationals a couple of weeks ago, we came away with 9 medals in total so it has been a successful year.”
When asked about this year’s Varsity fixture this is what Olivia had to say: “I’m really excited, we have a strong team this year so it will be good to see how much we have improved from last year. We want to win, I would like to end my role as president with the win and I think we can.”
UoN Table Tennis, Squash and Badminton also hope to defend their Varsity title’s and build upon an impressive set of wins at BUCS Big Wednesday!
