Team Malaysia vs Team China in Men’s and Women’s Basketball was the feature match of the day with the fixture coined as the jewel in the Tri Campus Games crown.
The crowd were pumped up, supporting their teams and giving extra encouragement and it was Women’s Basketball Team Malaysia who got the first points on the board with a simple 2 pointer at the net.
Team China who responded next and went on to register 23 unanswered points with an true exhibition of basketball. When the half time buzzer went the scores were Team Malaysia 11-33 Team China.
At the break, for some light-hearted fun, the Team Managers from the three campuses had a go at a free-throw challenge. Alice Kempski sunk her final attempt to claim bragging rights for Team UK.
Despite a spirited second half and a standout performance from Nurul Qistina Mohd Yusni, Team Malaysia couldn’t close the gap to Team China and the game finished Team Malaysia 16-48 Team China.
The Men’s match was a much closer affair and Team Malaysia’s Xuan Ian Chu made an instant impact with some brilliant post moves early in the game to create chances but Team China were equally matched to the challenge.
In particular, Albert provided significant pressure and creativity at point guard to open up opportunities.
Both teams traded deep 3 pointers in the second quarter and at the buzzer their was only 2 scores to separate the teams – Team China led 20-26.
To change things up in the second half Team Malaysia tried a few different defensive looks, switching to zone and then back to man-to-man coverage to try and disrupt the rhythm of Team China.
Unfortunately, they could not stop the power of Xiaofeng who’s numerous drives toward the basket drew multiple fouls an created havoc.
Team Malaysia slipped to a 16 point deficit in the 3rd quarter and sadly there was no coming back from that. Team China did enough to secure back-to-back victories in the 2018 Tri Campus Games with a 40-53 win that put them back in contention for the title.
Whilst Team UK mounted a serious challenge earlier in the morning with victories in Football and Tennis this was to be Team China’s day and they are now back in the mix for Tri Campus Games glory.
The athletes will take a short pause in the action tomorrow and engage in a cultural trip to the historic city of York.
The visit will provide teams with the perfect opportunity to have a break, sightsee and interact with different students from the three international campuses.
