BUCS round-up 12 November 2014

Eight University teams kept their Conference Cup runs alive this week by booking last sixteen slots. Whilst the strike rate was slightly down on last week’s 56%, the 23 wins provided many more impressive displays than the figures suggest.

It was an afternoon to remember for Ladies’ Badminton 1^st who defied the odds to defeat Loughborough 1^st 5-3 and end their unbeaten run in the process. Loughborough appeared on the fixture card fifteen times this week, and there was fantastic drama at Beeston Hockey Club where the Men’s’ 1^st team came from 2-0 down to beat their Premier North rivals 3-2. The Ladies’ 1^st XI followed suit, beating the same opposition    3-1 for the first time in many seasons, whilst the 3^rd XI trounced Trent 20-0.

The University’s good form continued at Highfields as Lacrosse 1^st team, once again hosting Loughborough, put in a display of sheer class to win 17-1. The Men’s Rugby Club also made use of the home advantage; the 2^nd XV pack drove over two tries on the way to a crucial 17-7 win and the 4^th XV overwhelmed lower league Birmingham City 60-17 at Riverside Sports Complex.

Elsewhere, Men’s Football 2^nd XI added to their impressive form, extending their run to five wins in their last six after a nail-biting penalty shootout victory over Staffordshire.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Netball as the 2^nd team maintained the high scoring trend by thrashing Buxton 83-4; however the 1^st and 3^rd teams were both halted by Birmingham.

Squash missed out on a clean sweep by one point, yet that could not dampen the celebrations of the Men’s 1^st team who moved into the top group after a comfortable playoff victory against southern rivals Exeter. They now stand a strong chance of finishing in the top four nationally.

And finally, ottingham were on the winning and losing side in the same match at University Park where a thrilling club battle between the Men’s Table Tennis 2^nd and 3^rd teams went to the wire. It was certainly not one to be missed – an inspired performance from the 3^rd side nearly caused an upset as they narrowly lost 9-8.

The results have maintained the University’s 4^th position in the BUCS standings, taking the league points up to 1439.
