BUCS Big Wednesday Preview: Women’s Badminton 1s

The Women’s Badminton 1st team aim to build on their league title success and end what has proved to be another successful season by winning the BUCS Championship, the final of which is to be held here at the University of Nottingham on BUCS Big Wednesday, on Wednesday 21st March!

The Women’s Badminton 1st team are set to face defending champions Loughborough University at 14:00 at the David Ross Sports Village in what is to be an encounter that is not to be missed. A dominant season from UoN saw them lose only won game, losing 5-3 to this years finalists Loughborough in November. At the end of the league season the two were both locked on 27 points and it took points difference to eventually separate them, seeing UoN clinch the league title.

UoN played exceptionally in the semi-final, not dropping a single game and winning 8-0 against a strong UCL team. The Women’s Badminton 1st team will be heading into the championship final confident that they can defeat rivals Loughborough and claim  a BUCS gold win!

Here’s the squad that will face Loughborough in the final:

1. Li Lian Yang

2. Tiara Samuel

3. Serena Midha

4. Emily Witts

5. Charlotte Ho

6. Vanessa Chien

The two sides met this time last year in the BUCS Championship Final which saw Loughborough win an intense final 6-2 to claim BUCS Gold, however when the two met in the league in October it was UoN who came out on top with a 5-3 win. Nottingham are seeking to build upon their BUCS league title victory. Having won once and lost once  to Loughborough so far this season hopefully a home encounter with a large crowd will make the difference in helping them to defeat the defending champions  and win BUCS gold!

The University of Nottingham’s Greenaway Scholar and BUCS National double gold medalist, Li Lan Yang, believes that team spirit could be the factor that separates the two teams and drives Nottingham to victory in the final “We have a great team spirit, we train together all the time and we know each other very well, we’re in all in this together!”

“We’ve never stopped training, the team is in a good state mentally and physically having come of the back of a strong performance and training camp for BUCS Nationals where we had fantastic success. It would be an amazing feeling to win the BUCS Championship on home soil.”

The University of Nottingham’s Director of Performance Badminton, Martyn Lewis, is encouraging people to come down and watch what is sure to be an exhilarating championship final. “Badminton is the fastest racquet sport in the world so naturally it will be an exciting match. There will be fireworks on court as there is a feisty rivalry between Nottingham and Loughborough for who gets that top spot in the country so the Women’s Championship final will have a real edge.”

The 2nd team are also playing in BUCS Big Wednesday in the Trophy final which will be held at 10am in David Ross Sports Village against Durham.
