Top 5 Health Benefits from using the Sauna

With the addition of the Health and Wellbeing suite to the David Ross Sports Village, we thought you might want to know about the scientifically proven health benefits to a regular 10 minutes in the sauna.

  1. Feel less stressed

We understand sitting in the heat with nothing to do is incredibly relaxing however there is science behind why you feel less stressed after 10 minutes in the sauna. In the relaxing setting of a sauna, your body secretes hormones such as endorphins that neutralise stressful hormones.

  1. Relax your muscles

The heat in the sauna increases blood flow to your muscles, therefore delivering more oxygen to the muscles. This is great after a hard workout as it aids recovery or could help if you’ve been using muscles involuntarily due to a stressful day at your computer.

  1. Improve your sleep

Exposing the body to high temperatures causes a drastic increase in metabolism, once you leave the health suite your body starts to cool naturally and it is this that induces a deeper sleep!

  1. Cleanse your skin

Saunas do not just cleanse your face but your whole body. Heat causes the body to sweat and it is this that lifts out toxins such as dead skin cells, dirt or anything that may cause pores to be clogged.

For best results, cleanse your skin with cold water, this closes the pores reducing the opportunity for more toxins to enter pores.

  1. Strengthen your immune system

Sauna sessions help produce white blood cells, they help the body to fight infections and ailments. Research has shown that, trained athletes show a higher increase in white blood cells compared to that of untrained participants. Research has also shown that regular sauna users have higher levels of white blood cells.
