University of Nottingham sail through to the European Universities Badminton Championship final
University of Nottingham are a game away from being crowned European Universities Badminton Champions 2019.
The team have fought their way to the finals after a tough draw which saw them matched up against University of Strasbourg, the team which sent them crashing out of the same tournament 12 months ago in Coimbra.
Against a tough Strasbourg team, singles victories for Lilian Yang (2-0) and Phone Naing (2-1) were followed by a women’s doubles victory for Lilian Yang and Emily Westwood (2-0). The resulting 3 points were enough to secure the match and progress to the semi-finals.
Speaking after this game Sam Smith, said,
“Beating Strasbourg was testament to our teams resilience and team spirit. After losing to them last year we came back stronger and are challenging for the Gold Medal.”
After topping Group D it was then onto a tough semi-final against University of Bern (SUI). This was to a be a much more straight forward affair, with Jonny Torjussen and Emily Westwood beating Sabrina mattle and Florain Schmid to get the first point on the board.
Phonr Naing bt. Patrick Buchi in straight games and Lilian Yang bt. Ronja Stern 2-1 to send University of Nottingham straight into Wednesday’s Gold medal match.
In the final, the Green and Gold will face University of West Bohemia (CZE) team with the hopes of being crowned EUSA Champions.

Speaking from Lodz, Head Coach, Marty Lewis said,
“The players have performed to the level they have trained for which for me is very pleasing.”
“They have risen to the occasion here in a very hot Poland and played brilliantly. The unity and support amongst the whole team seems to have spurred them on to perform at a level good enough to get them to the final and fingers crossed to keep them going to win a gold medal.”
