Get Active during Disability December

The University Sports Department supports all disabled students and staff in accessing sport, getting active and maintaining a good level of wellbeing.

Through the work of our Disability Sport Officer, the wider UoN Sport team, volunteers and student clubs, we are striving to deliver an inclusive offer which will best meets the needs of disabled members.

Whether you’re looking to exercise to help maintain a good level of wellbeing through going to one of our classes, taking a dip in the pool for a social swim, challenging yourself on the climbing wall or training for a 10km race, we have the facilities and staff to support you in these ambitions.

During Disability December, we are opening up a number of sessions for disabled staff and students to access. These include inclusive climbing sessions and supported fitness sessions at our David Ross Sports Village and Jubilee Sports Centres.

Our inclusive climbing sessions run every Sunday afternoon from 3 – 6pm at David Ross Sports Village. We have adaptive kit plus trained instructors to support disabled participants who want to try scaling our climbing or bouldering walls. Members and non-members (University staff and students) can book in for a one hour session on the wall on either the 2ndor 9thDecember, by contacting the Disability Sport Officer.

The supported fitness sessions (available to sports members only), involve being buddied up one-to-one with a qualified instructor in one of our fitness suites. Your instructor will provide you with an induction, work with you on a fitness programme and support you up to once a week to fulfil to help you achieve your goals in the fitness suite. These sessions have been running for just over three years and have proved to be popular with our current membership:

“At first, I began the sessions for exercise and to help my muscles in the face of my condition. HoweverI also saw that it helped reduce my anxiety symptoms and helped me to manage them more effectively.”

If you’d like to give these sessions a go during December, please contact our Disability Sport Officerto express your interest.

This is just a brief overview of some of the activities and facilities that are on offer to the University community. To find out more about the wider disability sport and fitness offer, please take a look at some of the useful links below:

We look forward to hearing from you!
