Sixty Symbols wins the Institute of Physics Kelvin Medal

Our popular YouTube channel ‘Sixty Symbols’ was recently honoured by the Institute of Physics in recognition of its innovative and effective promotion of the public understanding of physics.

Filmmaker Brady Haran and two of the presenters, Professor Mike Merrifield and Professor Philip Moriarty, were awarded the 2016 Kelvin Medal for public engagement within physics.   Many of the rest of the presenting team from the School of Physics and Astronomy attended a black-tie dinner in London to watch them collect the award.

Professor Michael Merrifield, Head of School of Physics and Astronomy, says of the videos: “I get a lot of pleasure from contributing to Sixty Symbols videos, and hope the viewers also enjoy them and learn a little interesting physics along the way.

Having made over 300 short videos on physics and astronomy we’ve rather overshot the original 60… but we have no plans to stop! If you have ideas for future videos, please leave them in the comments for us!
