Double shortlisting for Nottingham in the Times Higher Education Awards

The University has been shortlisted in two categories of the Times Higher Education Awards (THE).

The awards highlight the best of UK higher education and the winners will be announced at a gala awards night on 27th November 2014.

Nottingham has been shortlisted in the ‘Research Project of the Year’ and ‘Outstanding International Student Strategy’ categories.

The discovery of ‘Dua’s Layer’ has been submitted for the research project. Which saw the discovery of a previously undetected layer in the cornea – the clear window at the front of the human eye  – which is helping surgeons to improve the outcomes for patients.

The new layer was named after the academic who discovered it, Professor Harminder Dua.

This major discovery will mean ophthalmology textbooks will literally need to be re-written. Having identified this new and distinct layer deep in the tissue of the cornea, doctors are now exploiting its presence to make operations much safer and simpler for patients. From a clinical perspective, there are many diseases that affect the back of the cornea which clinicians across the world are already beginning to relate to the presence, absence or tear in this layer.

The discovery is also stimulating new research into glaucoma, a devastating disease caused by defective drainage of fluid from the eye and the world’s second leading cause of blindness. Dua’s Layer plays a vital role in the structure of the tissue that controls the flow of fluid from the eye.

‘From Compliance to Care – was put forward in the International Student Strategy category. As a university, Nottingham has a strong tradition of welcoming international students from all over the world.

In order to support them from pre-arrival through to post-graduation, Nottingham has introduced a range of measures to help overseas students in this area, including on-campus police registration all year round, interactive online sessions with applicants and immigration surgeries given by a leading law firm.
