Medics Musical 2024 – 9 to 5: The Musical

9 to 5 The Musical

A favourite event in the Medical School’s calendar is a musical theatre performance organised and cast by fourth year medics. This year, we’ve opted for the lovable music featured in ‘9 to 5’ by Dolly Parton; an uplifting story of three women and the overthrow of their self-absorbed boss.

Last year’s musical – RENT – was a huge success and we’re currently busy prepping this year’s performance. As medical students in our penultimate year, we have the tricky task of juggling rehearsals with full-time placement but are all thoroughly enjoying seeing the show come to life.

The story – for those of you that haven’t seen the hit 1980 movie – is set in the late 70s, featuring three women and their struggle against their “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical” boss. Judy, Violet and Doralee all have their own individual struggles, and come together in the face of the falsely charming Mr Hart, the firm’s executive. Through heartfelt solos and uplifting ensemble numbers, the women fantasise over and plot Hart’s demise. Featuring Dolly Parton’s infamous song ‘9 to 5’, alongside original musical numbers, the show is (in my opinion) a perfect way to spend an evening with loved ones!

Working on 9 to 5 has been a thoroughly enjoyable experience so far, and will continue to bring together both undergraduate and GEM students from so many different backgrounds. It’s the perfect opportunity to produce something fantastic as a year group, especially considering the disruption caused to our first few years post-Covid. Although rehearsal have been a pretty big time commitment from all of us, it’s an excellent opportunity to de-stress following exams & placement.

With all that said, as you can imagine there are huge costs associated with putting on a performance like this. If by any chance you feel you’d like to support our production, we’d appreciate donations of any size on our JustGiving page.

Please do take a look at our Instagram page, @medics.musical, for updates and behind the scenes content in the lead up to the shows.

And finally, we hope we’ve persuaded you our show might be worth a watch, so book your tickets now if you’re interested! The musical will be on the 7, 8, and 9 of March at Nottingham Arts Theatre, and we’d love to see you there!
