Meet the Student Academic Skills team
Meet our new Student Academic Skills team in Libraries.
Read on to find out a little more about who we are and how we can help you in your studies.
Who are we?
We are a group of five education specialists, from a range of backgrounds, based on level one of Hallward Library on University Park.
What do we do?
As a team, we are responsible for supporting the academic development of University of Nottingham students by making sure they have all the skills they need to be successful in their degrees.
We are working with a range of Schools across the university on programmes that help students in areas such as academic writing, time management, making use of feedback, and working in groups.
Our scope is huge, so wherever in the University you study, come and speak to us and let us know how we can help you!

How can we support you?
There are lots of things we’ll be doing, including:
– developing a comprehensive web resource where you can find guidance on specific academic skills and a tool to help you identify your areas for improvement
– working with module convenors across the University to ensure that you have the skills you need to achieve your best in modules
– listening to your opinions about the work that we do and the best ways we can support you.
Meet the Team
Beck Maguire (Senior Academic Skills Manager)
– Joined the University in 2008
– Beck lectured in Basic Skills in Further Education for seven years before moving into Higher Education
– Beck built and managed the Alternative Formats Service and provided support for disabled students. She was responsible for promoting inclusivity within libraries as the Librarian for Accessibility Support
– Cooking, eating, reading, painting, music and theatre are all on her list of interests but not always in that order!
Judy Fessey (Academic Skills Adviser – Academic Writing)
– Joined the University in 1990
– Lectured in physiotherapy for ten years; Judy has also worked as an admissions tutor, clinical supervisor and timetabling officer
– For the last six years, Judy worked as an Academic Support Tutor, mainly with students with dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD
– Enjoys meeting up with friends and planning the next trip!
Sophie Pullen (Academic Skills Adviser)
– Joined the University in 2019
– Registered Veterinary Nurse who has lectured in Veterinary Nursing in the UK and Hong Kong, in both Further and Higher Education
– Five years ago, Sophie decided to alter her career pathway and moved into the area of student academic support, a decision she has thoroughly enjoyed
– Recently moved to Nottingham and, as a cricket fan, has now become a supporter of the Nottingham Outlaws!
Tilda Stickley (Academic Skills Adviser)
– Joined the University in 2013
– Completed a PhD and post-doctoral project at the School of Education, researching both play in Early Years schooling and secondary education in Cambodia
– Worked as an education consultant in Hong Kong, teaching language arts, creative writing, and study skills
– Part-time actor and sausage dog fanatic
Liz Walsh (Academic Skills Adviser)
– Joined the University in 2019
– Former secondary and sixth form teacher, specialising in the study of Music
– Lived and worked in Mexico City for three years
– Keen CrossFitter and world traveller
