International Student Ambassador: Hazel from Italy

Our International Student Ambassadors provide campus tours, telephone calls and social media for international students preparing to study at Nottingham. Hazel is from Italy and is studying Law. Here are her thoughts on life at Nottingham.

Why did you choose the University of Nottingham?

The main reason behind my decision to attend the University of Nottingham was the possibility of studying a subject that related to my interest of law and languages. Other important factors that influenced my decision was the fact that the university is campus based, allowing a more community feel. Its global aspect was also very enticing to me, as I want to work internationally in the future.

What is your favourite thing about the University of Nottingham?

I would have to say that my favourite thing about the University of Nottingham is its global aspect, there is the possibility to meet people from all over the world. The fact that it is situated at the heart of the UK also facilitates exploring the rest of the country.

What is the best thing about your course?

I particularly appreciate the fact that I am able to study law with languages and that the course content itself is reflective of current affairs. In addition, the affiliate law societies host a range of opportunities such as volunteering in different legal areas and gaining work experience from the first year of your studies.

What was your first impression of the University of Nottingham?

Before I visited the University of Nottingham I did not have extremely high expectations and as cliché as it sounds, the first time I visited the university I knew that it was the right choice for me. The staff and students went out of their way to accommodate me and make me feel welcome. Most importantly, I was extremely satisfied with what my course had to offer and the facilities at the university.

What societies have you got involved with?

I am currently involved in an array of societies. The ones which I attend on a regular basis include the Pro Bono Society which organises a vast quantity of volunteering opportunities, the Latin, Salsa and Ballroom Society and the Italian Society.

What is your experience of accommodation in Nottingham?

Based from my personal experience, I would advise anyone who is starting their first year at university to stay in catered accommodation. Not only are you based on campus but it also saves you time from cooking and it pushes you to socialise as much as possible.

What would be your top tips for a new international student starting at the University of Nottingham in their first year?

I would firstly recommend joining as many societies and events as possible, especially those that are more daunting and new to you. Not only will this allow you to meet people outside or within your course, but you also gain new skills and experiences. Secondly, organise your time effectively, if you plan your studies and your spare time smartly, you will manage to find a balance to do everything that you please. I personally sit down every Sunday and use a weekly planner to organise my time. Last but not least, do not let yourself get discouraged easily, therefore be persistent. You might not find friends immediately or you might initially find your studies challenging, however, if you ask, there is always someone happy to help.
