International Student Ambassadors: Oluwaseun from Nigeria

Our International Student Ambassadors provide campus tours, telephone calls and social media for international students preparing to study at Nottingham. Oluwaseun is from Nigeria and is studying MPH Public Health (International Health). Here are her thoughts on life at Nottingham. 

Why did you choose the University of Nottingham?

The University of Nottingham stands out as a world top 1% University with a unique blend of all the condiments that would make for a fulfilling expedition academically and otherwise. I looked forward to working with experienced academics and professionals whose dividends of hard work are evident in the age-long success story of the university. Furthermore, the Public Health (International Health) course is well designed to align with the dynamic facets of health globally. In addition, the city’s scenic beauty, graceful geographical location, rich heritage and diverse cultural community made the University of Nottingham the preferred hub for my much-desired graduate program.

What is your favourite thing about the University of Nottingham?

The University of Nottingham is a multi-cultural university with people from different backgrounds coming together to lay a solid foundation for their future careers. Through my study at the University of Nottingham, I have been able to interact with people from other countries and cultures which has broadened and shaped my knowledge about other cultures and has given me different perspectives to life.

What is the best thing about your course?

I have realized through my course that a major bane of healthcare is how ideas translate from mere prints on paper to tangible realities and this has really shaped my perspective. I desired professional grooming in the field of Public Health (International Health), and so far, so good, the course has provided me with detailed understanding of health systems, policies, financing and key global health issues as well as key research skills. The course has provided me with a firm foothold upon which I will build a robust, lifelong career.

What do you do with your spare time, and what are your hobbies?

I split my spare time between studying, completing coursework and doing some chores. However, I study mostly during my spare time. I love listening to music, singing, shopping, watching movies and home-making.

What are you planning to do next with your career? 

Upon completion of my masters, I intend to return to Nigeria to work with the Federal Ministry of Health. By applying the knowledge and skills gained during the course, I intend to spearhead necessary reforms in Nigeria’s health systems as well as introduce innovative changes that will boost overall population health. Over the next 5 – 10 years, I intend to actively perform research and nurture capacity building particularly in the rural communities. Furthermore, I will stimulate collaboration with responsible health NGOs and agencies towards ensuring quality and wider healthcare coverage nationwide.
