Meet our Student Callers: Nimal from India
If you hold an offer to study at The University of Nottingham, you might be lucky enough to receive a call from one of our international students. Nimal has been speaking to Indian students (and their parents!) to let them know what Nottingham is really like.
Why did you choose to study at Nottingham?
Frankly, it was the availability of good funding opportunities that brought my attention initially towards The University of Nottingham. On further research, I developed a genuine interest towards the University owing to its international ranking, multicultural student community and its research focus in my interested area. The University has excellent collaboration with industries and their research work is world-leading, ticking all the boxes I was interested in. Ultimately, securing a fully funded scholarship made UoN a natural choice for me.
What is your favourite thing about living in Nottingham?
My daily commute to the University in the tram. Travelling in a tram gives a unique feeling unlike any other transport mode. Slowly bustling through the roads of Nottingham viewing the picturesque stone building at Old Market Square to the greenery in Forest Fields, a seat near the window is something that I would never miss on a ride.
Where is your favourite place in Nottingham, and why?
I love bodies of water and fortunately the University has lakes in both the campuses. Every so often, I find myself sitting on the chairs around the huge lake in the University Park Campus chilling out with the ducks after my lectures (great companions you see!). Also, I don’t miss the one in Jubilee Campus whenever I visit the International Office.
Where is your favourite place to eat out in Nottingham, and why?
Singh’s Restaurant in the City centre. With a superb service and the lovely ambience of a traditional Indian restaurant, it serves some of the trademark dishes from various states of the Indian subcontinent with a Punjabi twist. A restaurant that I visit occasionally to have the delicious home food.
Are you part of any societies?
I am an Executive at the Students’ Union Postgraduate Committee where we conduct events exclusively for the postgraduate students who often have different requirements from that of the undergraduates, be it in terms of socialising or career aspirations. From catching up with friends in Winter Ball during the Christmas break to our upcoming Link ’16, a student-led Interdisciplinary Research Conference, the committee has given me the opportunity to be part of a cause that I enjoy working on besides academics.
What’s the most frequently asked question students ask you, and what advice do you give them?
What are the scholarship opportunities available at the University and how to apply for them? The University has a vast portfolio of scholarships (even fully funded!) unlike most universities in the United Kingdom. Having won the fully funded Developing Solutions Masters Scholarship myself, I offer them some tips about the best way of displaying skills, motivation and career aspirations given the highly competitive nature of the scholarships. On occasions I happen to speak to parents and they ask about the security and study atmosphere in the university for which I describe the facilities and campuses in detail.
What’s your number one tip for international/EU students coming to Nottingham?
For those staying in self-catered halls and private accommodation, learn to cook while coming to the University as eating outside may not be an economical and healthy option. The city of Nottingham is multi-cultural and big enough so that you can expect to get everything you get back home. Also, you can experience the ambience of Nottingham only in Nottingham. Be open to the diversity, enjoy it to the maximum and take every experience as a part of learning curve for life.
What are you hoping to do after you graduate/finish your course?
I’m planning to further my research on composite materials through PhD and wish to take up a research oriented career in the aerospace sector.
Hello, I’m an undergraduate student and have been offered an unconditional place at the UoN for BSc Business Management. I would like to know more about the companies where the UoN graduates have been placed in.
Thank you.
Hi Aanchal! Congratulations on getting an unconditional offer! UoN graduates have excellent employment prospects, and we are consistently among the most targeted universities by the UK’s leading graduate employers. Some of the biggest employers of Nottingham graduates include PwC, Ernst & Young, Deloitte, Accenture, Rolls-Royce, HSBC, GlaxoSmithKline and IBM.

i am planning to pursue my M.sc in UON. My query is that apart from getting a fully-funded scholarship, are the daily expenses such as living, food and transport too much costly for an indian student coming from a mediocre family?
Hi Siddharth. Thanks for your question, and sorry for our delayed reply. Here is a response from Nimal:
Costly is a relative term and hence difficult to give a straight forward answer. I have provided here an average expenditure for a typical student just to give an idea.
Rent: This is the major chunk of your living expenses. The following link indicates the fees in different university halls (roughly £5000 per year).
http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/accommodation/documents/comparison-table201617.pdf
If you are planning to stay off-campus, you can get a shared house at £300-400 per month (will save considerable amount here but comes with certain differences).
If you are staying in the university halls, your rent will include the utility bills (gas, electricity, internet, water) as well. Otherwise, you might have to consider approx. another £50/month beyond your rent.
Food expenses (self-catering) – £100-150 / month (5 kg rice bag costs around £5)
Socialising expenses – £20-50 / month (largely varies with individual’s lifestyle. Movie ticket approx. £10)
Travel – You can travel free of cost between the campuses and halls through the university’s Hopper buses. You will only need to spend on tickets while going out [discounted student single fare by bus £1, by tram £2.2 on producing University ID]
Long distance travel – A Return journey to London costs around £15 if you book early in National Express coach.
Mobile recharge – £10 (depends on usage. 1pence per minute to call to India using Lyca/Lebara Sim cards). You will find free Wi-Fi in most places (campus, student halls, even city centre and restaurants will provide free guest Wi-Fi). You can save considerably through VoIP calling.
Medical expenses – Your National Health Insurance (NHS) will cover your doctor consultation and some medical expenses. You might have to buy medicines on your own though (which is relatively costly compared to India). Dental and ophthalmic treatment are excluded from this Insurance and they are very costly in UK. Spectacles cost £50 – 100.
This is realistic estimate based on my experience. Take it with a grain of salt as it completely varies with individual’s lifestyle.

Hi
Currently i am studying in class 12 commerce from a CBSE school. I am interested in doing my under graduation from Nottingham on BSc (Hons) Management. I dont have maths in my subject combination. My subject combination are English, Business Studies, Economics, Accountancy and Computer science. i had maths till class 10 and in my ICSE class 10 board exam I got 88 in maths.
Will I have any problem in getting admission because of Maths?
Thank You
Hi Arnab,
Thanks for your question! We are delighted to hear that you are considering study at The University of Nottingham.
The answer here is no, you will not have any problems relating to admission to BSc Management if you have not taken Maths at Class XII as it is not a prerequisite to the course. Provided that you have Maths at Class X at over 70% + this will be sufficient.
I hope that this helps, do let us know if you have any further questions!
Thanks,
Tim

Hi Naman,
I’m an Indian student who has secured admission in the Msc Economics and Development Economics program. I am applying to the Developing solutions scholarship and it would be great if you could offer me any tips regarding the same! I am sorry I saw your page late, and I have only a day to go before I submit my answers, but please do get back to me if possible!
Thanks
Hi Asmi. Our advice is to take time in preparing a good application (but make sure you don’t miss the deadline). Your application statements should explore how you aim to make an impact in your career and how our masters course and scholarship could help you achieve this. You should also highlight any relevant achievements you have made. You may find some useful guidance in other blog posts by scholarship winners: https://blogs.nottingham.ac.uk/internationalstudentlife/tag/scholarships-2
