Innovation from Diversity – Professor Simon Mosey
As we prepare for the new semester, I am reminded of the words of the VP of IBM, Claudia Brind-Woody:
“…a smart team will do amazing things, but truly diverse teams will do impossible things”
In planning to work with our students within these uncertain times, the true diversity of the HGI team has been unlocked as we have drawn upon past experiences of making music videos, studying copyright law and producing programmes for the BBC. The resulting innovations are amazing to behold and we can’t wait to welcome our students to share their different experiences of entrepreneurship with us in this new learning environment.
An unexpected outcome of preparing to deliver our largest classes online has been the freedom to invite individuals from all over the world into the classroom. We are particularly excited to draw upon the experiences of our newest Entrepreneurs in Residence who have kindly volunteered to support our budding entrepreneurs, despite not necessarily being located in Nottingham.
We welcome Laura Bond, who will inspire our students with her experience of Mimmo organics, a social enterprise bringing organic food to children in India. We are delighted to announce that Dr Terri Holloway, our Ingenuity lab manager, has also been appointed as EIR to share how she combined her US scholarship in English, Journalism and Business with her Nottingham PhD in Nutrition to create the award winning plant based nutrition company, Swapmeat.
They will be joined by two MBA alumni, Elaine Young and Wendy Furness, with board level experience of managing complex change and entrepreneurial experience in the Veterinary industry respectively. We are truly grateful for their support.
Our students have an exciting journey ahead as many of them settle in the UK for the first time. Our aim is to draw upon their diverse international experiences and give them a common language of entrepreneurship with which to share and extend their capabilities and aspirations.
I am sure that at least some of them will achieve the impossible by Christmas!
Professor Simon Mosey is the Director of the Haydn Green Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship
