‘Other Voices: A Different Outlook on Autism’ – Film Screening with Director Q&A – Nottingham Lakeside Arts – 29 November, 18:15
Tickets now available online or by phone from Nottingham Lakeside Arts.
What is autism? How can it be understood? Should it be treated, or respected as a form of human difference? These are but a few of the questions which circulate around this highly controversial topic. In attempting to answer them, the voices of autistic people themselves often go unheard. In a ground-breaking new documentary, artist and psychoanalyst Iván Ruiz Acero puts forward a passionate argument for a different outlook on autism; for a new way of listening to the voices of those who live with it.
Following the story of Albert – a 21 year old man diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome – the film brings together parents, families, autistic people, and psychoanalysts, to reflect on the world of autism. Approached from the perspectives of subjectivity, singularity, and respect, the film offers a different view of autism that provides an insight into the multiplicity of possible ways of being and surviving in the world. The film raises important questions about how autism is understood, and what should be done about it.
On November 29 2014, ‘Other Voices’ will be coming to Nottingham Lakeside Arts. Director Iván Ruiz Acero will be travelling from Barcelona to attend the event, which will be followed by an open audience Q&A. This is a unique opportunity to see this amazing film – which is not yet available on general release – and to engage in discussion about the questions that it raises. This event is open to all, and we warmly invite you to attend.
Doors will open at 18:15 and the film will start at 18:30. You’re welcome to arrive early and make use of the wonderful Lakeside Pavilion Café, which will be available for refreshments before the event begins.
Tickets cost just £5 and are available from the Box Office. Early booking is advised! You can book by phone (0115 846 7777) or online. All proceeds from ticket sales go directly towards the funding of the event.
