International students’ guide to making the best of UNNC

By Chin Yu Kwan, MSci Global Issues and Contemporary Chinese.

The China of today is very different from the China of before – a country once closed off to the world has now opened its doors. As an international student it’s a chance of a lifetime to study at The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC).

It’s already 10 years since UNNC’s establishment and the campus is very modern, meeting all the academic and social needs of students. The university is also one of the few Sino-foreign universities established in China. With a student population of more than 6,000 representing over 60 different countries, the University campus is extremely diverse and should not just be treated as a place of study, but also a place where students from different culture can integrate and exchange their cultural values.

Here is a short guide on how to make the most of your time at UNNC:

ISSOC

The university is home to the International Student Society (ISSOC), a student society which has members from diverse cultural backgrounds and hosts some of the most spectacular events throughout the year, promoting cultural integration of the diverse student population represented on campus. I highly recommend you participate in these events or even better join the society and have your own input.

One of the most prestigious events held by ISSOC is ‘Global Village’, where students from different cultural backgrounds set up stalls on UNNC’s High Street, near the area known as ‘Roller Skate Square’, to promote their cultures through a wide variety of methods, such as food or music. This event is held yearly and gives you the opportunity to experience the University’s diversity first hand.

Diversity through sport

Not only do students promote diversity and integration, but the University does too. Annually, the University participates in an event known as the ‘Six University Sports Event’ in which the six most prestigious universities in Ningbo compete against one another.

Each year UNNC not only stands out for its sporting performance, but for also being the only university to send a diverse team of international and domestic students. The opportunity to participate in this event should not be missed. It is a great opportunity to work together with students from different cultural backgrounds and promote the diversity of an ever-increasingly globalised world.

As an international student I understand that we choose this path to expand our horizons not only academically but also culturally. The University of Nottingham Ningbo China is a massive cultural mix and both ISSOC and the University administration actively promote all kinds of events to help you make the most of your time. Don’t miss the opportunities presented.

Studying at UNNC was a life changing experience for me, one I will never forget for the rest of my life, and it can be for you too.
