Some Sustainable Listening

Our Student Communications and Engagement Assistant, Meg, is a podcast enthusiast. Here, she introduces a new feature to our newsletters:

It is embarrassing how many times my sentences start with, ‘so I was listening to this podcast…’, and it generally results in an eye roll from my friends. I think podcasts are a great way to find out news or listen to discussions on a very specific topic. They can also cater for different moods, as the tone of a podcast can range from factual and information heavy to more light-hearted and comedic.  What I particularly love about podcasts is that I can listen whilst on the go, or doing chores that don’t require much thought ( not that I don’t also use them to procrastinate). In light of my love of the podcast, I would like to start a feature where we recommend podcast episodes for particular topics, similar to how our newsletter shares news articles.

Climate and Environmental Justice:

The first topic to be covered will be climate and environmental justice.  This topic is in response to recent events connected to the Black Lives Matter movement. As many of the recommended episodes will discuss, sustainable solutions must address racial and social inequalities.

• So Hot Right Now: ”A new podcast on a mission to change the conversation about nature and the climate crisis”. This podcast is hosted by Lucy Siegle and Tom Mustill, a journalist who regularly features on The One Show and a wildlife film maker.

• Mothers of Invention: ”Climate change is a man-made problem — with a feminist solution!” Join former Irish President Mary Robinson and comedian Maeve Higgins as they celebrate the remarkable work of women in the pursuit of climate justice.

Energy and Emissions

The next topic is energy and emissions. As the university begins to reopen over the coming months, this is an opportunity to consider our emissions and energy consumption. In a previous post, Environmental Manager Gavin Scott reflected on the short term impact that lockdown has had on the university’s carbon footprint. Similarly, many of these episodes discuss the impact of the global pandemic on emissions and what a ‘green recovery’ could involve.
