Things to do when stuck inside
Switching to online learning is leaving us with a lot of free time… and for many people, a lot of boredom. Although online lectures and preparation for assessments are fleshing out my to-do list, this time is also a great opportunity to catch up on all the things you’ve been putting off! So here’s my list of ideas for things to do when stuck at home.
1. Creative projects
Maybe you’ve always been curious about trying an unfamiliar art medium… or maybe you’ve forgotten how much you loved to draw. This is the perfect opportunity to dig up some old art supplies (or order new ones online!) and find your artistic outlet!
2. Reading
When was the last time you read for pleasure? As a STEM subject student, it’s been a while for me… but this is a great time to search through your home library and find a book you haven’t had a chance to read yet. If your home collection doesn’t have anything that tickles your fancy, remember that you can access ebooks from the University of Nottingham libraries!
3. Mending or upcycling old clothes
Remember that shirt that used to be your favourite but now has a hole in it? Fix it! You’ve got nothing but time and I’m sure you can find some thread and needles to refresh your wardrobe. This means cool patches on that old bag at the back of your closet or embroidery accents on the jeans that are just a little too plain. Pinterest is a great tool if you’re lacking some inspiration and you can find all of the accessories you might need online. All it takes is a little digging and practice!
4. Practice your cooking/baking skills
Being in and out of the house can mean that we often stick to the same safe meals. This is the time for experimenting! Why not try your hand at baking a cake? Or combining a bunch of ingredients from your cupboards and coming up with something completely new? If you have limited ingredients to work with, you can use a website like myfridgefood.com which asks you what ingredients you have and gives you recipes you can make with what you have!
5. Practise mindfulness
Often, we don’t have time in our busy lives to sit down for 10-15 minutes each day to meditate or practise mindfulness. There are plenty of apps you can download for guided meditations: Headspace, Calm and many more – all you need to do is type in mindfulness into your phone’s app store.
Stay safe and enjoy your time indoors!
