Oh My English
Hello again,
I know, it’s exam season. So, I understand if you don’t even have time to read any blogs. Thus, I’m going to keep it short (I’ll try my best).
Living in the accommodation at King’s Mill hospital for the past 13 weeks (wow, it’s really been that long :O) made me realise a lot of things. One of them is about me using English as a 2nd language. Honestly, I thought that I’ve always been a reasonably good English speaker. It’s only during CP1 (Clinical Phase 1 – the first phase for medical students to train at hospitals) that I became cognisant that I have difficulty in listening and pronunciation but not to a great extent.
Sometimes, I have to ask my friends to say certain things again. It’s quite embarrassing for me to ask them to repeat again. I know that they don’t mind about it since they know that my 1st language is not English. That’s okay, I believe I’ll become better in listening in the future.
Secondly, my pronunciation. Well, it’s not that bad. But I often have trouble to pronounce words beginning with “th..” especially the word “third”. Whenever I say “third”, the listener (a native English speaker) would often hear it as “tenth”. Hahaha, I am really not saying it correctly. But I think I’m getting better now. You’d laugh if you see me trying to say the word “third” as it usually involves me making weird tongue movements, lol.
Okay, that’s all for now. Before I go, here’s an advertisement all the way from Malaysia for a programme to promote English proficiency among students
p.s. I actually made the same mistake when I was in school 😛
Till then, take care!
Being me,
Wafi 😉
