International Women’s Day 2018

Thursday 8 March is International Women’s Day 2018. In celebration of this date, a number of activities and events are set to take place at the University of Nottingham.

International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

What’s on?

Events held at Nottingham to celebrate the day will include:

  • Nottingham Presses for Progress!
    12-4:30pm, Thursday 8 March
The University of Nottingham is joining with Nottingham Trent University to host this celebratory event, which will bring together our two university communities to celebrate the achievements of women in our city. Our inspirational speakers will share experiences within both academia and industry, provide local perspectives on recruiting, retaining and growing talent and leadership, and give valuable insight into how we can support gender equality within our university communities, higher education and more broadly.
  • UoN/NTU joint Women’s Staff Network event
    10am-2pm, Thursday 8 March
An informal event hosted by the Women’s Staff Networks from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, with the theme of ‘promoting wellbeing’. This drop-in event will be open to all existing members of the two networks, as well as anybody who is interested in finding out more about the networks.
  • LeadMeet and networking lunch
    12:30pm-2pm, Thursday 8 March
This event will feature short talks by a number of presenters, followed by a networking lunch. It is supported by the Faculty of Social Sciences and was facilitated by @WomensEd West Midlands.
  • Inspiring Women through Sport
    6pm-8:30pm, Thursday 8 March
An evening showcasing the career paths of women in different industries, and telling the story of the adversities and challenges that they overcame to get to where they are today.

As part of the day’s celebrations Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West will also launch two new initiatives from the Communications and Advocacy team, designed to help boost the visibility of the many talented women at Nottingham who have expertise to share. These initiatives are:

  • The Nottingham Women Experts Network, which will include a series of free events and training, running throughout the year.
  • A female-only hard-copy version of the Media Guide to Expertise, created in conjunction with Nottingham Trent University. This guide will be shared with media, public policymakers and other stakeholders to help end the excuse that ‘there are no women experts’ in any given subject.

We’ll also be introducing the Portrait Project — an exhibition to diversify portraiture at the University. Check back on the day to find out more details.
