This Is Beeston
Beyond the West Entrance of University Park, if you cross the road and keep on going past Broadgate Park, lies Beeston. Many of our students and staff choose to make the town their home while they study or work at the University, and many more pop in to pick up some essentials or a bite to eat.
Here in the Off Campus Student Affairs team, we’re big fans of Beeston. It’s a small town with lots going on, and loads to offer our students. This Saturday (18th October) is a particularly exciting day because it’s going to give everyone a chance to see Beeston at its bursting-at-the-seams-with-brilliant-things best. It’s a day-long celebration of community, charity, food, music and fun. What could be better?
We’ve joined up with our community partners to put on an event called This Is Beeston at Bartons, which will be running from 12-4pm and showcasing some of the excellent organisations and groups that make up the fabric of Beeston. With student groups and academic research from the University sitting alongside crime prevention advice, volunteering opportunities, tram track training for cyclists, handy hints on living a green life, one hundred things to love about Beeston and the chance to learn about all the different parts of your local community plus much more (including plenty of top quality freebies – hurrah!), it’s a great way to spend part of your weekend.
Once you’ve checked out This Is Beeston, there’s so much more to keep you busy in Beeston this Saturday. Just next door at Bartons you can explore the Carnival of Monsters Festival of Contemporary Art, and if you step outside onto Chilwell High Road, there’s a Street Festival full of entertainment and activities to get involved in.
Explore a little further, and you’ll find the whole of Beeston alive with live music all day and into the night. The Oxjam Beeston Takeover music festival is going to be swinging into action, and there’ll be free entertainment across a range of venues until the early evening. You can buy a wristband (buy in advance online for a discounted ticket for a mere £5 or buy on the day at This Is Beeston) and enjoy the music into the night. All this, and the warm glow of knowing it’s for charity – what could be better? Check out the acts and venues on the Oxjam Beeston Takeover website.
We really hope that lots of our students will get to know Beeston a little better this weekend – let us know if you’re planning to pop along to some of the events. We’d love to hear what you think.
