ROUND UP: A summer of good news for The University of Nottingham
The University of Nottingham is celebrating a summer of successes as it prepares to welcome students for the new academic year. Read on to find a selection of the stories putting Nottingham in the news.
HIGHEST LEVEL OF STUDENT SATISFACTION
The results for the 2016 National Student Survey (NSS) were our best to date.
We achieved our highest ever level of ‘overall satisfaction’ – 89% – against last year’s 86% and our previous high of 88% (in 2014).
The corresponding score for question 22 was 4.29 – again the highest we’ve achieved and which also just exceeds the University’s Strategy 2020 target of 4.28.
Our average score across all questions was also our highest, at 4.16. This score across all questions places Nottingham at 9th within the Russell Group, as compared to 17th in the 2015 results (noting that reported rank within any group depends on which NSS measures are used).
We also maintained our very high response rate of 75%, reflecting our students’ strong engagement with providing us this important source of feedback and insight about their experience.
STUDENT LEARNING COMMENDED
The high quality and standards of our higher education were recognised by the award of the Quality Mark by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA).
In its report the QAA commended the University for its enhancement of student learning opportunities – the highest rating possible – and identified five areas of good practice.
FEES TO STAY THE SAME FOR RETURNING STUDENTS
The University of Nottingham took the decision not to apply inflationary tuition fees to returning students.
Following a Government announcement to allow undergraduate fees to rise in line with inflation for the 2017/18 academic year, the University is thought to have been one of the first to state this will not apply to returning students.
HEALTH CENTRE
Cripps Health Centre, the GP surgery that serves The University of Nottingham has been rated the best in Nottingham by its patients.
With around 41,000 patients, Cripps Health Centre is the biggest single-site GP practice in the country.
However, a new health centre is in the pipeline following a £9 million gift to the University by the Cripps Foundation – the largest single donation from a private foundation in the University’s history.
SPORTS NEWS
In July the University achieves its best ever total in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) rankings.
Over the past year the University’s sports teams dominated across numerous disciplines to finish fourth place with a total of 3553.5 points.
The BUCS league table totals up points from 47 different sports from institutions across all four home nations. University of Nottingham joins an elite top five universities whose teams and individual participants have performed at the highest level in the 2015/16 academic year.
OLYMPIC SUCCESS
Nottingham alumni have scooped two silver medals in the Rio Olympics with the biggest success taking place out on the water in the canoe slalom and the rowing.
After clocking a time of 102.01 seconds (+0.43 behind the Slovakian gold medallist team) there was a nail biting wait for David Florence (Mathematical Physics 2005 graduate) and teammate Richard Hounslow, as they had to watch the German pair navigate the course before their silver medal could be confirmed.
2005 graduate Melanie Wilson was part of the Women’s eight rowing team who powered from the back of the pack at the halfway point to a photo-finish, claiming the silver medal and scooping the first ever Olympic medal won by a British women’s eight.
Current students will be able to train in our £40 million David Ross Sports Village which opens this Autumn.
