25 Years on Kegworth survivors meet the man who saved their lives.
It is 25 years since the Kegworth aircrash and tomorrow morning (Thursday 16 January 2014) the BBC One programme Real Lives Reunited captures the moment two of the survivors are reunited with the man they credit with saving their lives.
Professor Angus Wallace, from The University of Nottingham, is one of the country’s leading orthopaedic surgeons. He was on duty at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham on the night of the disaster in January 1989 which claimed the lives of 47 people.
He hadn’t seen Chris Thompson and Dominica McGowan since they were discharged from hospital. Knowing all too well the extent of their injuries he was surprised at how well they have recovered from their terrible injuries.
Professor Wallace said: “They just walked in the door. It was special. It’s not often that you see the final outcome, all the way down the line, of work that you have done. I knew how badly they had been injured. We gave them, from this hospital, very good orthopaedic care but for people with the severity of injuries that they had walking with no limp was really good. I really was very, very impressed.”
The story of the Kegworth disaster, which claimed the lives of 47 people, is recounted by Chris Thompson and Dominica McGowan and will be shown at 11.45am tomorrow – Thursday 16 January 2014.
