Faculty of Engineering awarded Silver Athena SWAN accreditation

The University’s Faculty of Engineering has once again been awarded silver accreditation for its commitment to advancing women’s careers in STEM subjects.

The submission to the Athena SWAN panel was led by Professor Barbara Turnbull, Associate Professor in Environmental Fluid Mechanics, who said: “The faculty has taken the position that supporting and encouraging women are practices that create a positive working environment for everyone.

“Our renewed silver SWAN award shows that we have the systems in place and the desire to continually improve the working environment. The submission was a huge team effort, with contributions from all Departments, staff groups, students and external critics and truly demonstrates the grass roots will to improve and change.”

Professor Andrew Long, Executive Dean of Engineering added: “I am absolutely delighted with the renewal of our Athena SWAN Silver award. This demonstrates our commitment to support women in the Faculty, and the excellent progress we have made in recent years. ”

During this round, 113 higher education institutions, research institutes and individual schools and departments received an ECU Athena SWAN award. It is the highest number of awards presented to date, with the success rate increasing in this round compared to the last from 69 per cent to 73 per cent.

The awards ceremony will be held on 15 June 2015 at the University of Greenwich.
