50 at 50: Dean’s Closing Blog
As our celebrations for the 50th Anniversary of Medicine at the University of Nottingham comes to a close, it’s incredible to think how much has changed since we started our 50th year towards the end of 2020.
We’ve faced the many ups and downs of a global pandemic, and now we’re witness to the horror of the war in Ukraine. Medicine and healthcare are there to improve people’s lives, to help and to heal wherever possible. In these continued challenging times, the global medical workforce have achieved incredible things. But we must always remember that their neutrality must be respected to allow them to move freely and care for the patients that need them no matter the situation.
Our thoughts are with those affected by these global events and as a School community, we are determined to help however we can.
In spite of all of the challenges we’ve faced, this past year and a half we’ve been able to share some amazing moments.
Our 50 at 50 blog series has heard from many of our staff and students across a huge range of topics. We’ve looked at the past and the careers of some of our incredible staff and alumni, we’ve looked at the current journeys of some of our students, the current state of healthcare and research, diversity, inclusion, and more, and we’ve also looked to the future of where our research is taking us.
We’ve also held a number of symposiums and lectures covering everything from transformative inclusion to eczema, trauma, and the importance of curiosity, diversity, and role models in science. We’ve also had Q&As with world leaders like our incoming Faculty Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Jonathan Van Tam, and Director-General of the World Health Organization and honorary professor, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
I want to thank everyone who has taken part in our 50th Anniversary celebrations and everyone past and present who form our School of Medicine family. Together we have and we are improving people’s health and wellbeing through outstanding education and research. Together our curiosity and ambition has led us to new and exciting breakthroughs already in the past 50 years and will undoubtedly lead us to even more in the next 50 years.
It has been an incredible honour to serve as your Dean during this uniquely challenging year. Stay safe and thank you.
Congratulations on your 50th Anniversary.
Congratulations. Big 50.
