Early English Books Online (EEBO)

Early English Books Online (EEBO) features page images of almost every work printed in the British Isles and North America, as well as works in English printed elsewhere from 1470-1700. From the first book printed in English through to the ages of Spenser, Shakespeare and of the English Civil War, EEBO’s content draws on authoritative and respected short-title catalogues of the period and features a substantial number of text transcriptions specially created for the product. 

Highlights include: 

• Early English Books 1473-1640. This collection comprehensively documents the English Renaissance and includes literary works from Spenser, Shakespeare and Bacon, as well as historic documents and religious writings. 
• Early English Books 1641-1700. Spanning the English Civil War and the Restoration, this collection includes books by Newton, Galileo and Boyle, as well as early editions of Aphra Behn and Margaret Cavendish. 
• Thomason Tracts. This collection gathered by London publisher and bookseller George Thomason has over 22,000 items from 1640-1660 and includes speeches made in Parliament, gossip concerning the court, sermons and political diatribes, and news reports with detailed accounts of battles and political machinations.

Early English Books Online has changed platform and the old link to Chadwyck Healey’s site is no longer valid. Early English Books Online is now available on the enhanced ProQuest platform and is cross-searchable with Early European Books, ProQuest journals, newspapers, dissertations and other relevant databases. The ProQuest platform delivers a modern research experience that guides users’ discovery, access and management of rich, diverse content sources.
