International Student Ambassadors: Mouna from Senegal
Mouna is a Senegalese student who is studying MBA Master of Business Administration
Why did you choose the University of Nottingham?
The MBA at Nottingham looked perfect and focused on entrepreneurship. It is one of the top 100 MBA in the world and a good value for money. I also loved the city; it was the ideal size to have fun and be able to focus on my studies at the same time. I like the historical side of the city as well.
What is your favourite thing about the University of Nottingham?
The lake and the sport village are my favourite. The staff is really helpful, and the facilities are all you need. My first visit was at the Portland building, it looked like a beehive, so young and lively! I felt 18 again and full of energy.
What is the best thing about your course?
My classmates! We are from close to 20 different countries and it is an amazing learning experience. We all get along very well. I have my study group we are 5 and they are the best thing that could have happened to me this year.
What do you do with your spare time, and what are your hobbies?
I love to read, walk around the city, go to my favourite coffee shops and parks. I still have so much to see. I am also part of the international student network
What do you like about Nottingham as a city?
It is clean and affordable. The bus system is very easy to navigate and reliable but most of the places are within walking distance. I enjoy walking between places.
What is your experience so far of the University of Nottingham?
It was a very intense first semester. I did not see it passing and all of a sudden, exams were here. The essays and exam period was tough but it has been my most rewarding experience in a long time.
What is your experience of accommodation in Nottingham?
It has been difficult because I did not apply for a university accommodation and had to look in the private sector. The university student help service has been absolutely amazing helping me review my contract and making sure I find a safe place. I ended up finding a beautiful studio which I dearly call home.
What have you learnt from being a student at the University of Nottingham?
I am not a native English speaker and only started speaking English five years ago. I remember when I first submitted a long essay without any help, I looked back at it and I realised that everything is actually possible when you put your mind in it.
What are you planning to do next with your career?
I am still thinking about it but I am interested in everything about social impact and sustainability combined with technology and innovation. I like to start initiatives. So maybe you will find me running my business in a few years.
What would be your top tips for a new international student starting at the University of Nottingham in their first year?
Be open! There is nothing to fear. Nottingham as a city and a university has been one of the easiest places I have ever had to navigate. I have made so many friends that I need to plan my week-end in advance to choose who to see and when to study. It is a place open to diversity and I love it.
