International Student Ambassador: Hisham from Egypt
Our International Student Ambassadors provide campus tours, telephone calls and social media for international students preparing to study at Nottingham. Hisham is from Egypt and is studying PhD Medicine. Here are his thoughts on life at Nottingham.
Why did you choose the University of Nottingham?
Firstly, when I searched online I found that the University of Nottingham was one of the top ranked universities in the UK and ranked highly globally, especially in my research field. I also liked the multicultural diversity of the students.
What is your favourite thing about the University of Nottingham?
Many things! Firstly, it is a global university with multi-cultural diversity, I made friends from all over the world. There is also an established Students’ Union with many social, cultural, activity based and sporting societies. Last but not least, the campus, it is one of the most beautiful and greenest campuses around.
What is the best thing about your course?
My research topic is so challenging within my speciality field of human infertility and reproductive health. I like the experience I am gaining through this PhD as it is a building up process.
Did you receive a scholarship?
Yes, the Developing Solutions Masters Scholarship that was awarded for my Masters course at Nottingham before starting my PhD.
What societies have you got involved with?
I was the President of the Egyptian Society from 2015/2016. This allowed fellow Egyptians to meet up and gave the opportunity to promote everything there is about Egypt, for anyone interested in knowing more about our culture. I am also a member of the Rambling society, Travel society and Badminton society.
What do you like about Nottingham as a city?
Nottingham is a students’ city with many international students and I was lucky to be introduced to different cultures. The city is very safe and has a good transport network. The city centre also has everything I need, including restaurants and clothing brands. The cost of living is cheaper in comparison to other cities and the location of Nottingham, (in the Midlands) also makes it easier to travel around the UK.
What is your experience of accommodation in Nottingham?
All options are available in Nottingham. Campus based accommodation offers a friendly and safe student community, its location is near to university facilities and bills are included. This is also a good option until you have discovered the city too. There are rooms available to rent in houses shared with other students and you can rent a studio apartment, if you are searching for more privacy and want your own space.
What would be your top tips for a new international student starting at the University of Nottingham in their first year?
Enjoy your university life to the maximum; you won’t get this opportunity again to gain such a valuable experience.
