Nottingham Students Combine Food and Tech to Launch UK’s First Halal Delivery App

A trio of former University of Nottingham students are going from strength-to-strength in the business world after launching the UK’s first halal food delivery app.

Rawan Abu-Ishira (26), Amur Anzorov (24) and Tawfiq Abu-Khajil (22) are the brains behind the award-winning Halalivery app, which allows users to order halal food straight to their doorstep.

The fast-growing startup – which is based at the university’s Ingenuity Lab on Triumph Road – already has over 25 restaurants, three butcheries and three groceries signed-up, with plans to expand to other UK cities in the near future.

“Once we introduced the idea of Halalivery to various vendors across Nottingham, there was an immense amount of support and excitement for the idea,” said Tawfiq, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of the company.

“Our main aim is not to be another commercial app in the market – we aspire to building a clearer image on halal meat, and build a long-lasting community that truly reflects the image behind halal food.”

Having individually moved from Russia, Palestine and Jordan to study in the UK, the young team met at the university and came up with the idea for the business after finding it difficult to source halal food.

And their innovation has won national recognition after picking up an award from the Ideas Mean Business initiative – a campaign in partnership with the Government’s Innovate UK project and The Prince’s Trust, which is designed to support young people to make their ideas a reality regardless of their background.

Rawan, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, said: “Winning this award shows our rapid improvement and will definitely create an impact towards achieving our short and long-term aspirations for the business.”

Steve Champan, Head of the University of Nottingham’s Ingenuity Lab, had high praise for the young trio.  He said:  “I have been privileged to witness the growth of Halalivery and see how they have created what we hope will be a successful and scalable business.

“They have built a strong team, work extremely hard, and demonstrate an innate understanding of business, and the sector they intend to innovate within.  Being Russian, Palestinian and Jordanian, they also represent the real value and power of Britain’s multicultural society.”

The app is available to download from the App Store and Google Play.
