Ingenuity16 Mentor Profile: Ed Wright
During Ingenuity16, a range of successful business professionals have got involved in mentoring the University of Nottingham’s budding entrepreneurs. Their guidance and advice has been incredibly useful for the students and alumni competing for the £100,000 prize fund.
Over the next few weeks, we will be uploading profiles of some of Ingenuity16’s mentors and coaches so you can find out a bit more about them and their top tips for success.
We’re kicking things off with Ed Wright, who has been involved in helping students and alumni from the University of Nottingham for over 10 years…
Company name: Shakespeare Martineau LLP
Role: Partner in the Commercial IP team based at the Nottingham office
Website: www.shma.co.uk
What is your educational background?
I graduated from Durham University with a 2:1 in my LLB Honours law degree, completed my LPC at the College of Law, York, and then successfully completed my PSC and training contract at Dentons in London, qualifying into its Technology, Media and Telecoms department.
How did you originally get involved with the Ingenuity Lab?
After making the move from London to Nottingham back in early 2004, I met with Dan Edge of the Innovation Labs (as it then was) and agreed to start providing monthly commercial/IP legal surgeries for the benefit of the members/tenants. I had already worked closely with Steve Chapman in the course of various business ventures for around a decade, when the Innovations Labs evolved into the Ingenuity Lab with Steve at the helm.
What piece of advice would you give to anyone interested in setting up their own business?
Always make sure that you have identified, secured and protected the intellectual property rights underpinning your business and the associated products/services.
It is also important to ensure the business operates with a fit-for-purpose set of standard trading terms. These terms need to be incorporated as the contractual basis upon which all business is conducted.
