Hyperacusis in children
Is your child sensitive to sound (called hyperacusis)
Or are you a clinician who works with children who are sensitive to sound?
WE HAVE COMPLETED THIS PART OF THE STUDY WITH CLINICIANS. WE ARE NOW RECRUITING PARENTS AND HAVE A NEW POST ON 24 JANUARY 2023 TO EXPLAIN.
Please help us in designing a new questionnaire for hyperacusis in children
What is hyperacusis?
Hyperacusis is a condition common in children. It is where they experience a debilitating intolerance to everyday sounds. They may struggle with the normal sounds present at home and outside, settling into nursery and school, attending fun classes and parties. This can have a severe impact on their daily lives and well-being. It can make it difficult for the child to build friendships and learn well at school.
What will our study do?
Despite the fact that clinicians often see children with hyperacusis, there are no child-appropriate measures to support them in correctly diagnosing hyperacusis. This study will work with clinicians and parents to design and test a questionnaire for assessing hyperacusis in children. Having such a questionnaire will:
- Provide a tool to support clinicians in the correct diagnosis of children with hyperacusis
- Make it easier to design clinical trials to test other assessment tools and therapies for hyperacusis in children.
How can I help?
If you are a clinician who works with children with hyperacusis or a parent/guardian of a child, aged 2 to 7, diagnosed with the condition we need your help! We would like to invite you to a one-to-one interview over the telephone or in person to discuss children’s experiences of hyperacusis.
