The Project Management Institute (PMI) recently organised a day-long hackathon as part of its Sustainability Summit 2023, inviting university students to tackle sustainability challenges. Students had to identify a community sustainability issue and suggest an innovative project to solve it. They also had to consider project management details like goals, timelines, budgets, stakeholders, and potential challenges.

Sixteen students from the University of Nottingham on the MSc module BUSI4135 Project Management embraced the opportunity, forming three dynamic teams named Alpha, Beta, and Gamma.

Team building:

Team Alpha: Rajesh Kumar Elangovan, Matias Molina Cortez, Priyaranjan Khare, Abhipsa Mishra, and Harshith Ravi Kumar

Preparation was key, with students attending a training session two days prior and a briefing session the day before the hackathon, guided by Project Management module convenor, Dr Christos Braziotis (Associate Professor in Supply Chain and Operations Management) and Professor Bartholomew MacCarthy (Professor of Operations Management). On the day of the hackathon, each team occupied a dedicated room in the XU Yafen Building on the Jubilee campus, adopting a collaborative environment for solution coordination and presentation preparation for PMI judges.

Outcomes:

The teams performed exceptionally well demonstrating effective collaboration within their respective teams. The judges were impressed with the innovative solutions proposed and the quality of their presentations and awarded the teams as follows:

  • Team Alpha: Highest impact
  • Team Beta: Most other organisations support the project.
  • Team Gamma: Best ideas to mitigate risks.

As a globally recognised professional institute, PMI commended the teams’ impressive solutions and presentations.

Congratulations to the teams for their outstanding contributions at the PMI Sustainability Summit 2023 hackathon.
