1 December: Glee for Three Voices
This piece is taken from the University’s collection of early music and is the opening section of an 18th century musical interpretation by John Percy of winter from William Shakespeare’s Love’s Labour Lost (printed London, c.1795).
Below is a video of a special performance for your viewing and listening pleasure by five of The University of Nottingham’s first year music students – and we think that five voices sound even better than three!
The song is performed in the Music Department‘s Djanogly Recital Hall at Lakeside Arts Centre by Claire Whiting, Mia Bekvalac, Andrew Randall, Greg Link and Edward Reid:
If you can’t see the YouTube video try this alternative location or search for it on iTunesU. And if you would like to sing the piece for yourself, here is a PDF of the music for Glee for Three Voices in its entirety.
For students who like to sing, you can do so throughout the year as part of the University’s Philharmonia and Choir. This Christmas, the University Choir are joining Viva Voce and the Revival Gospel Choir to perform as part of a free Carol Service at St Mary’s Church on 7 December at 7.30pm.
All of the items featured in our e-Advent calendar are from the University’s historic library holdings, held in Manuscripts and Special Collections. For more information on the wide range of materials available, take a look at their website and blog or contact the curators on mss-library@nottingham.ac.uk.
