My Weekend in Shorts
Last week I had the fortune of finding myself in balmy Barcelona, my brother and I, whisked away by our father for a joint birthday weekend in Spain. The main purpose of our trip was to watch Barcelona play Celta Vigo, not an especially important or potentially extraordinary fixture by any means, but a chance for us to watch the best team on the planet demonstrate the beautiful game in all its glory. And what a game it was. After 90 minutes it finished 6-1 to Barca, although this score doesn’t nearly do Celta’s performance justice, at the end of the day it was a valiant effort against a superior side . The game featured goals from Suarez, Neymar and Messi and even a rarely seen in-direct penalty to secure the match. For a football fan who is used to cold, uneventful and often disappointing trips to watch Bristol City play a handful of fixtures a year it truly was an amazing experience. 90 minutes of athletic excellence and skill, it was pure footballing ecstasy. However don’t let my slight obsession paint the picture that the football was the only great thing about my trip. Barcelona was quite simply the best city I’ve ever been to, a beautiful coastline, picturesque mountains and a thriving youth culture it really did have it all. To anyone thinking of travelling around Europe, I highly recommend visiting. From the summit of nearby Mount Tibidabo you could really take in the whole city in all its beauty, as fine a place as any to watch the sun set over the Mediterranean. The days really shot by and before I knew it I was back in frigid old England and my fleeting affair with shorts and flip flops was over all too soon.
