National Cancer Day (4th February)

If you’re not currently aware, today is National Cancer Day!

Cancer seems to have filtered into my life as of late from the Cancer module last semester to volunteering at Cancer Research UK and I’m sure most peoples lives have been touched by the disease.

Although no doubt we think of loved ones daily, today enables a range of people from all walks of life affected by Cancer to unite and show their support through wristbands (if you’re lucky enough to get hold of one-they were like gold dust yesterday in Nottingham) with the donations helping to further cancer research.

Donations to Cancer Research don’t have to be monetary. Whether stuck in traffic on your way to work or waiting for the kettle to boil you can contribute through the Reverse the Odds free app where the game enables the public to analyse images of tumour tissue donated by former patients. Presently in the UK 1 in 2 of us will be diagnosed with cancer, of which there are over 100 types, however the survival rate has doubles since 1970s. Through this collaboration of the public and scientists, the hope is this survival rate can be improved exponentially with more data able to be processed allowing scientists to learn more about different cancers and thus future patients can be prescribed the most optimum treatment.
