Show Racism the Red Card Event, Thursday 25 October, A3, Teaching and Learning Building
Gone are the days when bananas were thrown at football players and monkey chants could be heard in the crowd, sometimes from their own fans. Or are they?
When we see white police officers shooting or beating black men in USA we think that at least we aren’t as bad as that. Or are we?
We like to believe that we are a tolerant society and welcoming to all nationalities. But what is life like for the 3rd or 4th generation Black British today?
With the recent “Windrush” scandal still fresh in our minds it shows we cannot be complacent about our attitudes.
Show Racism the Red Card is the UK’s leading anti racism educational charity. Established in January 1996 initially to tackle racism in football it utilises professional footballers to tell their personal stories and to challenge people to reflect on their own attitudes to people of other ethnicity.
On Thursday 25 October UNISON is hosting a Show Racism the Red Card event at the Teaching and Learning Building. That’s the new building between the back of Hallward Library and The Hemsley. So why not come along, grab a slice of pizza, listen to some inspirational speakers and maybe stay around for a Q and A session? The speakers are due to start at 1 p.m. and will last about an hour.
The latest educational film, which was shown for the first time in Parliament on Tuesday 16th October, can be viewed. Two former professional footballers, Chris Freestone and Chris Iwelumo will be speaking about their experiences and the work of Show Racism the Red Card. Nadia Whittome has just been elected as UoN Student Union BME Officer and will give an insight on what it is like to be young and Black today. We also have a speaker from Thompson’s solicitors who will explain the type of incidents in the workplace they deal with. There will be a chance to ask questions at the end.
It will be an interesting and thought provoking event that shouldn’t be missed.
