Keywords and Thoughts – The Things That Made Us

In the second podcast of The Things That Made Us we look at Raymond Williams’s classic work, Keywords. This is a fantastic introduction to the concepts and terms that will be used in classes for anyone studying at university. If you are unsure of the debates in seminars and lectures then Keywords offers you insight. It’s not a dictionary or a thesaurus, it is an analysis of how concepts like ‘culture’ or ‘nature’ have been defined by societies for centuries.

For interdisciplinary scholars, works like Keywords demonstrate the fluidity of concepts that once seemed so set in stone. Using history, language, sociology and politics, this book explores how our understanding and uses of these ideas are far more complex than our employment of them implies. There is complexity here but this is complexity that is useful. We can see how our world is far more diverse and complication than we thought but that it is still comprehensible by taking a different approach.
