Handy Heritage Pack Facilitates Fieldwork by Kimberley Weir

History PhD candidate Kimberley Weir borrowed one of our Heritage Digital Activity Packs to take along on a field trip to the Philippines in May, we asked her to let us know how useful she found it, she went one further and wrote us a blog! 

The Heritage Digital Activity Pack (available from the Digital Humanities Centre) was such a useful addition to my recent fieldwork trip to the Philippines. You can borrow a whole range of equipment but as I was planning to spend a lot of time travelling around Manila, conducting interviews and visiting monuments and memorials I didn’t want to take too much.

The tablet was a great thing to have as it was light and easily portable, making open air note taking much more convenient and meant I didn’t have to worry about carrying my laptop around. It was really reassuring to have the microphone too when I was interviewing, as I wasn’t concerned about anything not being picked up by the recording. The resulting footage was very clear and made the dreaded transcription process much easier! The tripod also came in handy for filming and photographing some of the sites I visited.

In addition to the tablet and microphone you can also borrow a camera, video camera and audio recorder as part of the Heritage Digital Activity Pack. Just head to the Digital Humanities Centre with your student ID card to find out more.
