DTH Spotlight : The Digital Marketing Project 2022 by Chloe Love
Chloe Love is a third year Culture, Languages and Area Studies student, she had been volunteering on the DTH Digital Marketing project since October 2021 and shares her thoughts on the experience here.
The Digital Transformations Hub (DTH) offers Faculty of Arts students the opportunity to volunteer for a range of different projects every year. This year I am a member of a small group of students volunteering on the Digital Marketing project. This is a perfect opportunity for me to develop new skills in the final year of my degree which I hope will help me to secure work in the digital marketing industry once I graduate. This blog will give a greater insight into what volunteering entails, with a focus on the Marketing project, and why it is an unmissable opportunity for Faculty of Arts students.
What does the Digital Marketing project involve?
As volunteers on the Digital Marketing project, we are responsible for spreading awareness of, and increasing engagement with, the DTH. The DTH provides resources and support that are beneficial to all members of staff and students in the faculty and our it is our job to ensure that they are all aware of them! This means that we have the task of managing the DTH social media accounts including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and most recently TikTok. We monitor analytics, create content and support events like the upcoming Open Days.
What other benefits are there to volunteering?
Besides skills and experience, working in the DTH provides a great opportunity to learn how to use a wide range of equipment and software, including cameras, scanners, audio recording and VR equipment. I am learning skills that I would never have learnt outside of the DTH; for instance, I am currently self-teaching Photoshop which is available (and free to all FoA students!) on all DTH PCs as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud package which also includes InDesign, Final Cut and Acrobat along with some great learning resources.
How can you become a volunteer?
DTH manager Matt Davies will be looking for students to apply for roles in 2022-23, so if you are currently a FoA 1st or 2nd year student, regularly check your emails during the summer semester. To find out more about volunteering check out the volunteer webpage here, or why not visit us in the DTH and ask us any questions that you have? All of us volunteers will gladly help if we can.
Do I need previous experience?
No not at all! The marketing project may sound a bit daunting, but I came to the role with limited digital marketing skills and am learning on the job from DTH staff and other team members. Also, at the start of our volunteering experience, the DTH organised a marketing workshop led by senior administrator on the School of Humanities Marketing team, Vicki Morris. This was a great opportunity to ask questions and to learn more about what the role entails. I also participated in the Digital Marketing Academy run by the University’s Careers and Employability department which gave me a good grounding in digital marketing and volunteering has enabled me to put the theory into practice. So no need to worry about being thrown in at the deep end!
If you are an enthusiastic individual who can work well in a team, volunteering is for you! If you are considering a career working in social media, digital marketing, or the creative industry, then the marketing project is the perfect opportunity for you to develop the skills and experience you need to boost your CV.
What next?
As well as raising awareness, it is our role to report on the other DTH projects and over the coming months, we will provide an insight into what these projects entail. Please note; writing and editing posts for the DTH is yet another opportunity to expand those marketing skills and work experience even further!
Other Marketing team members this year are: Lucy Ayliffe. Alexa Rivera and Virina Sheth
