Welcome to the CIEL blog!
The Centre for Interprofessional Education and Learning (CIEL) works to advance collaboration and multidisciplinary teamwork between a variety of health and social care students at the University of Nottingham. We bring together students and staff from eight departments across three faculties – Dietetics, Medicine, Midwifery, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Sport Rehab – for a range of interprofessional activities. The aim of these is to encourage the different professions to learn with, from and about each other in order to improve collaboration, the exchange of expertise and the resultant quality of care (CAIPE UK).
Our mission is to increase awareness of the importance of interprofessional health and social care amongst students, professionals and educators within and beyond the University of Nottingham. Interprofessional education has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as ‘an innovative strategy that will play an important role in mitigating the global health workforce crisis’ (WHO, 2010). It has therefore never been more vital for professions to work together to provide the multi-faceted care needed to combat the public health challenges of the 21st century. Issues ranging from obesity to mental health, from cancer to addiction and from antibiotic resistance to population growth, all require a collective approach if they are to be effectively tackled and managed.
This blog will explore the diverse roles of health and social care professionals, highlight how they intersect with one another and show that effective or ineffective collaboration can have a real-life impact on patients. Through a range of case studies, personal stories and topical debates, we will demonstrate the importance of interprofessional learning to ongoing healthcare education.
