Why I chose a career in the Civil Service and my Fast Stream experience
By Maia Linley-Adams, Geography graduate
When I first came across the Civil Service, I didn’t know much about what it involved. I found out more thanks to the support from the university’s Careers team and after attending an autumn careers fair, where I had the chance to speak to civil servants about their work. That initial conversation sparked my interest, and I was particularly drawn to the idea of meaningful, varied work that directly impacts people’s lives across the UK.
After researching more, I realised the Civil Service Fast Stream offered a unique chance to develop leadership skills, gain experience in different departments, and make a real difference early on in my career. The scheme stood out for its hands-on approach, supportive environment, and the breadth of opportunities it offers. I decided to apply – and I’m so glad I did.
Prepare for the application process
The application process, however, was tough. Like most graduate schemes, it was long and highly competitive. It included psychometric tests, a maths test, behavioural questions, and an assessment centre. While that might sound intimidating, it’s very similar to the process for most top graduate schemes.
My advice? Practice. There are plenty of good mock tests and resources online. Make use of LinkedIn too – don’t be afraid to reach out to people who’ve been through the process. Most are happy to share their experiences and offer tips.
When it comes to applying, keep an open mind and cast a wide net. Apply early and apply for a range of roles – all graduate jobs are oversubscribed these days, and rejection is part of the process. Try not to take it personally. Keep your head up and stay motivated. If you have the drive, you can get to where you want to be – with or without a graduate scheme.
On the Fast Stream
Since joining the Fast Stream, I’ve had two fantastic placements.
My first role was as a People Data Analyst in the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. It was a great opportunity to work at the intersection of people, data, and strategy – and to be part of something that’s making a real impact in the energy sector.
My current posting is in the Ministry of Justice, working on Civil Service pay reform – a complex and fascinating area that affects thousands of public servants.
Both placements have been hugely rewarding and have helped me grow both professionally and personally.
Emphasis on personal development
One of the best things about the Fast Stream is the emphasis on development. There’s a real focus on learning, leadership, and gaining broad experience. I’ve had access to great mentors, regular training, and countless networking opportunities. The support from the Fast Stream team has also been excellent – they really care about your growth and wellbeing.
If you’re a student thinking about your future, I’d absolutely recommend considering the Civil Service. It’s a place where you can lead, learn, and make a difference – all while building a career that matters.
