The wonderful impact of the Literacy support Project!
Alexandra Moore, 2nd year English and Classics, tells us about her experience on the Literacy Support Programme.
The process of application
My experience applying for the placement enabled me to understand the procedures of a recruitment process for potential career paths. It gave me vital practice to project my own skills and personality. The staff were extremely encouraging and were excited to work with me which was very encouraging. The health and safety training also gave me the safeguarding confidence I needed to enter into a new role.
The Placement
The experience was unforgettable! The teachers were wonderfully flexible and helped me to arrange a suitable working schedule around my university studies. When that was organized I was assigned with a year 5 class. The opportunity allowed me to understand how to respond to each child’s specific needs, and cater for their learning requirements.
The school itself taught me valuable lessons in community ethos and how it can really boost the development of children. Bluecoat Aspley Primary school really encouraged my curiosity within the education sector and nurtured my own skills in teaching and safeguarding.
The eagerness of the year 5 class also encouraged a refreshing enthusiasm towards my own studies. Their curiosity afforded me a wonderful experience which always lightened my week. It was heart warming when the pupils I helped were excited to see me and tell me all about their hobbies and lessons.
I sincerely recommend this placement as both the university and academic staff are most encouraging and thorough in their preparations for the placement. It truly enhanced my passion with English literature, particularly as it meaningfully benefitted towards the development of young children. Moreover, the welfare check ups from the university also support us and help to manage the workload. It was truly comforting to know that had we help to fall back on.
Looking back, looking forward
Overall, my experience has not only given me valuable insight into prospective career paths, but has filled me with earth knowing I also beneficially contributed to the learning developments of younger students. The plethora of opportunities given by the university definitely piqued my initial interest and ultimately afforded me with such an unforgettable experience! Although it was a volunteering role, the skills and experience I gained from the placement has enhanced my understanding and insight of the education system. As a result, I can use the placement as a foundation to further boost my career prospects in teaching!
