Behind the Scenes at Notts County

Rupert Cullinane, 3rd year International Media and Communications Studies, reflects on the start of his placement with Notts County

A Chance Opportunity

The story of how I secured this role is a little unconventional. Initially, I applied for the role of education officer within the academy. However, during my interview, Josh (my placement host), spotted my media experience and suggested I join the academy in a social media role instead. With a second interview quickly arranged, I presented a PowerPoint detailing my previous media experience and shared some ideas for the role. After reflecting on the offer, I knew this was the perfect opportunity for me, and I eagerly accepted.

Although there was a delay to my onboarding due to safeguarding training, Hayley and Jo from the Faculty of Arts placement team fully supported me throughout the process and ensured I started as soon as possible. From the start, the team at Notts County made me feel welcome. On my very first day, I found myself playing in a tournament with the academy players’ dads.  I even managed to finish on the winning team!

Memorable Moments

One of the standout moments of my placement so far was covering the U18s’ FA Youth Cup match against Fulham. It was an unforgettable experience, as it marked the academy’

s furthest progress in the competition in eight years. Pitch side, I captured photos and provided live updates on the academy’s social media channels, soaking in the energy of a match day at Meadow Lane.

Beyond match coverage, I’ve had the chance to work on a range of exciting projects. I wrote and designed the academy’s first newsletter for players and parents.  This highlighted achievements and built a sense of community. I also collaborated with the first team’s media department and conducted interviews with academy players and staff. These experiences allowed me to refine my communication skills and expand my professional network.

Looking Ahead

This placement has been instrumental in shaping my career goals. I’ve gained valuable insights into what it’s like to work in the creative industry and at a professional football club. The independence given to me in this role has also boosted my confidence and prepared me for future challenges.

What I’ve Learned

If I could offer any advice to students thinking of applying for placement opportunities it would be – “the worst, they can say is no”. Always apply! Although the initial role wasn’t completely aligned with my career aspirations or my skills, had I not applied, I wouldn’t have been offered the opportunity to join as a social media intern. If an offer is extended to you, you will always be given the chance to reflect and there’s no pressure to accept the role if it isn’t for you.

While the role is unpaid, the club kindly covered the costs of my DBS check and travel expenses. However, the experience, skills, and connections I’ve gained are priceless. I’m extremely lucky to have been invited to continue my placement with the club through to March and can’t wait to see what the future holds!
