A24 Studio Internship
My Placement Experience: A24
Ed Farley reflects on his summer internship with a leading film studio
The Dream Opportunity
My placement with A24, truly enlightened me to the world of film and television; a subject I had the pleasure of studying at the university for four years. Seeing what I learnt in the classroom materialise in a three-dimensional form was an invaluable experience that I will take with me in my future aspirations. It felt so completely surreal that for 9 weeks, I was working with a boundary pushing award winning studio that I had been a fan of for years. The process made what I love accessible, unlocking confidence I did not know I had, and creating skills I have always wished to have. On both a personal and professional level, it meant a great deal that the university’s vibrant ties to the industry allowed for such an opportunity.
The Reality
In this paid placement, I worked in the heart of London. I had not worked in London for a prolonged period before, and my various responsibilities took me around multiple different places. It was an exciting atmosphere that I enjoyed meeting every day. Working for a dynamic, talented team of industry professionals, I felt part of a team that made me feel welcome as soon as I started. The different roles of each team member gave me new perspectives of the field. I was lucky enough to see a wide scope of what it entails to create a project, from both development to production. I not only witnessed this process but was also trusted to work within both capacities.
The Gains
Here, I learnt multiple different processes that I hadn’t even considered before. This challenged and expanded my skill set. I had a realistic, grounded view of the industry, humanising it to a level that made working in this industry feel possible. Being part of the magic I’ve loved for years has truly informed my studies. It has reiterated all the work I have done leading up to this point, is exactly what I have always wanted to do. The diversity of my responsibilities have proven to be very transferable as I am now navigating the job market. I realise that all the skills I gained are resonant to so many separate roles, both in and out of the industry.
The Future
Aside from increasing my professional potential, my varied responsibilities paired with the vibrant working environment has enhanced my confidence. It has empowered me and intensified my appreciation and desire to work in the film and television industry. I wholeheartedly recommend other students get involved with the university’s placement programmes. It has widened my skill set, perspective and opportunities, changing me for the better. With so much that this opportunity has given me, I am so incredibly excited for what is next.
