6 ways to prepare for the graduate job market this term

The next module to feature in our ‘new module’ series is the NUBS Employer Insights Programme. We invited module convenor, Daniella Dutton, to guest blog for us and explain how this scheme will give you the skills for success in the graduate job market.

Explore your options

This module gives you the opportunity to gain an understanding of a range of sectors and identify which areas could be the perfect career path for you to follow. Our handpicked employers will cover topics such as finance, investment banking, telecommunications and fast moving consumer goods to name but a few. The purpose of these sessions will be to inform you on the range of opportunities available and increase your commercial awareness of these areas.

Make connections

Typically the employers attending will send members of their HR team and a recent graduate from the University of Nottingham. Don’t miss the chance to build your network (you never know, the person you meet at the event may just end up reviewing your application form). Social media is a brilliant way to promote yourself in a professional manner and our session on using social media in your job hunt is definitely not one to be missed!

Build your personal brand

Can everyone you meet receive, retain and repeat your personal brand message? This session will fill you in on the 3 R’s of Personal Branding and help you develop your career toolkit which is a vital step in developing your personal brand.

Prepare for applications

As well as providing you with insights into sectors, the Employer Insights Programme will also equip you with those all-important skills to assist you with getting those jobs. We will have sessions covering topics such as how to make your CV stand out, telephone interviews, application forms and interviewing with success. Don’t miss out on the chance to learn from the experts and prepare yourself for the job market.

Get accredited

This programme is not only a useful tool to prepare you for the world of graduate job hunting, but it also counts towards your completion of the Nottingham Advantage Award. This module will give you 10 credits and all you need to do is:

•  Attend 10 sessions over the autumn and spring terms
• Complete a session reflection for each of these sessions
• Write a reflective essay once you have attended the required number of sessions
